My dog growls when I make a cat purring sound. Is he confused?

It could be that Molly is trying to make additional sounds of happiness, but it's coming out as a growl. Cats can purr and growl at the same time, but if she is looking for love at the time and doesn't appear upset or distressed, I would be inclined to think it may be a happy noise for her, as strange as that sounds.

It might be that the noise is just bothersome to him and avoiding doing it is best. However, if you'd like to turn it into a more positive experience, you can start to give a favorite treat to him every time you make the sound. Simply make the sound and immediately give/toss the treat before he has a chance to start growling. Over time he'll learn to associate it with a positive (the treat) instead of a negative.

No, this likely means that he is timid so I would recommend to always go very slowly with him and to talk to him in a soft voice so that he starts getting more used to you. Treats are always great too. If Louis is making this sound only when resting, it could be that he is purring because he's happy and relaxed. I'd be more concerned about it if he was making this sound all the time, and in that case, I'd recommend a vet visit. I hope this helps!

This is perfectly normal. Some cats have a tiny quiet purr, others a very loud purr, and others again actually open their mouth a little to purr loudly. The louder your kitty purrs the happier it is. Hairballs usually cause a cough. Sounds like you have a very happy kitty.

Not always, dogs can growl when playing, when frustrated, when experiencing pleasure. Of course these are all different (pitch, tone, situation). Yes, this sounds normal. Some dogs do not like to be bothered when they are sleeping and just need time away from other pets (or even other people!). I would recommend that you allow your older dog to have a space away from the puppy for sleeping - you may also try crate training both of them to keep them safe when you are away. Growling is a way for dogs to communicate, and hopefully the puppy will start to understand soon!
