Can pet reptiles and amphibians safely live with a cancer patient?
Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While I would recommend your mother consult with her doctor about their recommendations for her, I see no reason why they couldn't be in the house. However, be aware that Salmonella bacteria is part of the natural skin flora of many reptiles, so I would take that into consideration and limit her contact with the pets. But, again, her doctor would be the best person to offer her guidelines. Hope this helps.

What's the best cheap gecko for a beginner with a 20-gallon tank?
Leopard geckos are great "starter" reptiles. They don't require special lighting (UVB) like other reptiles. A 20 gallon tank is big enough for one. Add a heat source, hides and a water bowl and you are good to go. Is softened well water safe for hermit crabs? Do I need conditioner?
Hermit crabs should have a bowl of fresh water and a bowl of salt water available at all times. "Softened" water is not recommended due to the higher mineral and salt content. The easiest solution is to use bottled water for the fresh water bowl and distilled water with plain aquarium salt (NOT table salt) for the salt water bowl.
