My dog has white eyes, skin spots, & stinky. Can I treat at home?
Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concerns. The eyes look to be cataracts, which there is not much you can do for cataracts (medically). Surgically, you can have these removed but this procedure typically costs $3000 per eye in my experience. It is possible that the cataracts could be due to diabetes but without blood work, it is difficult to say. Even if this was due to diabetes, there is no reversing the condition once developed. The skin could be a skin infection or allergy. I would recommend using the following products, which can all be found online to see if this helps the skin. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules 2. Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved 3. Malacetic conditioning spray and apply twice daily to the affected area until resolved

My dog has an ear infection. Can I use eye drops? Is it an emergency?
Poor DDuang! Ear infections are very uncomfortable. I would not recommend using ophthalmic ointment in the ear, as these medications are not designed for this and could damage his eardrum or the nerves in his middle ear. It's fine to use a regular ear cleaner labeled for dogs to help clean the discharge out of the ear - this won't treat the underlying infection, but may make Dduang a bit more comfortable until he can get treatment. An ear infection is not an emergency, per se, but it's certainly uncomfortable and unpleasant for both of you! Personally, I would probably go ahead and take your pup to the emergency clinic tonight or tomorrow rather than waiting until next week for treatment. You could also call some other vets locally to see if they have any appointments available tomorrow, since this would probably be cheaper than an emergency visit. The vet will take a sample of the discharge for analysis under the microscope and prescribe appropriate medication to treat the infection depending on what is found.

Do dog skin and allergy vitamins work? What about cloudy eyes?
Supplements, such as Omega 3 fatty acids (Welactin is one example), can be beneficial to maintain skin health if Daisy has allergies. They are not a magic cure-all, but when used in conjunction with other management strategies for allergy triggers (diet changes, flea presentation, antihistamines, allergy immunotherapy injections, etc.), can be helpful in many dogs. There are no eye drops that will improve cataracts or age-related changes (lenticular sclerosis). Eye cloudiness can also be caused by glaucoma, corneal ulcers, among other inflammatory conditions. Consider having her eyes evaluated by a vet to determine the cause of the cloudiness so that it can be managed.
