My puppy bites. Are pig ears and chicken sticks healthy for her?
Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. The pig ears and chicken sticks typically have a lot of preservatives in them and can cause GI upset. I usually recommend the Kong toys filled with peanut butter or dental chew sticks like Oravet or Greenies. If Honey does ok with the chews you are giving her now, then in moderation these should be ok to give her every now and then. Hi there. I do like the Himalayan Yak Chews for large-breed dogs - just make sure to get the largest size they have. Large bully sticks and all natural rawhide chews (I like the ones made by Raw Feeding Miami) are also good options.

My dog won't eat dental bones. What are other good dental chews?
For my own personal dogs, I like bully sticks, large rawhide chews, or cow or pig ears - all of these can be good options for chewing, and will help to prevent tartar build-up and periodontal disease. You may need to try a few different options for your dog to see what she likes. You should also supervise her closely at first to make sure that she is not attempting to swallow any of these items whole.

Are Himalayan churpi chews safe? Can they break my dog's teeth or hurt her?
Hello, and thank you for your question. These dried yak's milk treats are typically very hard, and can definitely damage her teeth over time. What happens is the chewing causes tiny microfractures in the teeth which can eventually result in a big slab fracture of the chewing teeth, requiring emergency dental surgery. I'd also be worried about the sharp shards, as I am not aware of any studies demonstrating the fragments dissolve in the stomach before passing through into the intestines. When you are looking for a chewing treat, try the "fingernail test" - if you can't make an indent in the treat with your fingernail, then it is too hard for your dog's teeth. Can my 12-week-old Yorkie puppy safely chew on pig ear treats?
Pig's ears can be OK in small quantities and with strict monitoring, however large pieces can cause a young dog (and even older dogs) to choke, so removing any pieces that become too soft or pose a choking hazard is best. Other toys such as a Kong filled with treats or peanut butter, or a Nylabone that is more digestible and chewable are great safer alternatives to give and still stimulate chewing needs.
