Why is my 12-year-old Briard suddenly so gassy? What should I do?

Hi there. I suggest you use a probiotic for Bentley. Fortiflora is my favorite but you can use any probiotic made for dogs (no human products or dairy). I would give it daily for one month to see if there are any changes. The probiotic adds "good bacteria" to his intestinal tract that may quiet the gas. Change his diet to boiled chicken and rice a GI formukabsince it is easy to digest. You can also add a probiotic to the food to help replenish the good, normal bacteria. If this does not help you can try gas x. If it continues then I would consider a check for parasites and blood work to make sure oral medicine is it needed

The most common reasons are bacterial imbalance issues, a poor response to the fiber in the diet or parasites. You may try switching the food. I recommend Royal Canin because it has a great fiber blend. You can start them on a probiotic - Purina FortiFlora is a great one. If negative, I would recommend changing her diet to something less rich. In the US, I recommend Science Diet or Purina One Smartblend. It's possible something in the diet is not setting well with her. It's also possible there is a bacterial imbalance, parasites or the wrong kind of fiber. Also, home made diets are generally difficult to balance which can lead to problems over time. For the best nutrition, I recommend to work with a veterinary nutritionist who can formula a good diet. I also recommend to rule out parasites by having Luna's stool checked. A probiotic may help. Switching her diet to a high quality, commercial diet that has all the required nutrients and required fiber may help too. I recommend Royal Canin. Best of luck.

Hello. This much gas is of concern, but it is not an indication that nutrients are not being utilized. Hills i/d is a high fiber food, and the intestinal bacteria may just be trying to adjust to the new diet. This might take several weeks. If the gas production is still overwhelming, I might try one of the hypoallergenic diets like the Prescription Diet z/d & see if this helps with the gas. Always remember to take your time to when switching diets taking 4-10 days to completely change over from the old to the new food. Hope this helps Oscar's little problem. SHe is likely gassy because of indigestion from the food or she could also have intestinal parasites. I would recommend changing the quality of food if that is an area for improvement. Some good qualty foods to consider are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba or Purina. This can help improve Junie's digestion. I would also recommend exercising Junie daily to help her GI tract motility. And lastly giving her a probiotic daily can help support her GI flora.
