My 1-month-old beagle puppy has a skin infection. Should I worry?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It does look like Max has a skin infection. Washing him was a good idea but he likely needs oral antibiotics to cure it. Puppies commonly get skin infections on their belly because they have a weak immune system. I would take him to the vet to get medications started. Good luck and kisses to Max!

If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Buddy looks to have an ear infection and the ear looks very inflamed. Ear infections need the attention of a veterinarian. There are several different types of infection and the doctor will perform a simple diagnostic to know what type of medication to use. The skin rash and the ear infection could be related although beagles are a breed prone to ear infections due to the heavy, drop ears. I recommend to pick up an ear cleaner at the veterinarian’s office and stay on a regiment of routine ear cleaning after the ear infection is cleared. If this is the first time he has had any issues, he will likely be treated symptomatically. If the problems come back then start looking for an underlying allergy as the cause. Ear infections can get worse quickly and they can become painful so it’s best to try to get this taken care of today. I hope but he starts feeling better quickly.

The picture is a bit blurry and it is hard to see what is going on. In order to diagnosis a skin condition in Bluey, he will need to have a few simple skin tests performed by his veterinarian. Mite infection, fungal infection, or bacterial infection are all possibilities. This needs to be confirmed with an exam and a few simple skin tests. Best wishes to you and Bluey!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Thanks for the pictures. It appears as though Sparky may have a bacterial skin infection, or puppy pyoderma. A lot of times puppy pyoderma resolves on it's own. If it gets worse than this I would recommend taking Sparky to the Vet to be evaluated and prescribed oral antibiotics. I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as this will likely require local therapy with cleaning of the site, pain control medications and antibiotics. Also, your veterinarian could check for a possible underlying cause like allergies, mites or a foreign body reaction. Good luck!

It looks like Bruno has a skin infection. Parasites like mites and fleas can cause irritation of the skin that can lead to bacterial infections. If he has not had skin scrapings performed to look for mites, that would be my recommendation. If there are no mites, and he has been treated for fleas, then perhaps the topical medications he is on are not enough, and he needs an oral antibiotic to control the infection. I hope this helps.
