If a mother has rabies, can her babies get it? How long do they live?

I would not be worried about this at all unless the mother died from rabies. The chances of her having rabies is extremely, extremely, extremely low. They cannot be born with rabies but they can get it from the mother's milk but the mother must be infected for this to happen. Did the mother have rabies? My suggestion is to keep her away from other animals that have not be vaccinated against rabies (including wild animals) until she is old enough to get her own vaccination. Hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any bite from an unvaccinated animal puts you at risk for Rabies. Getting antibodies from the mother's milk is not enough protection. If the puppy has been indoors and not bitten by an unvaccinated animal it is VERY unlikely that it has Rabies. IF Dachie has Rabies he will die or show symptoms with in 10 days, if that happens you should seek immediate rabies treatment. You should be fine to wait the 10 days. Isolate and quarantine the puppy. It is good you have had the Rabies vaccine and you are likely protected but everyone's immune system is different. If you were bitten by a rabid animal you would be treated regardless of your own vaccine history but it is less involved. Have all your dogs Rabies vaccinated when age appropriate. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In retrospect you should have had the bat tested. That would have been the best way to know. If your country is Rabies free then the bat likely doesn't have Rabies either. I would trust your countries health officials on this. The bat would have had to get it's saliva in to your dog via a bit or her mucous membranes (gums, eyes, cut on skin). In the US an unvaccinated pet that may be exposed to rabies is quarantined for 6 months because that is the maximum amount of time it can take for rabies to become contagious or obvious. It can happen sooner. Rabies is only contagious when it is in the final stages, in the salivary glands. Once it is in the salivary glands the animal will show signs of rabies with in 10 days. Hello, and thanks for your question about Chappy. Yes, I would definitely get Chappy's rabies vaccine boostered as soon as possible to keep her current, even if she's still nursing those puppies. Since she's not technically current on her rabies, just make sure she doesn't encounter any strangers (either people or pets) where she could be at risk of biting or being bitten, until you're able to get her in for her shot next week. If a dog has Rabies and is the INFECTIOUS stage of the disease (an animal can be infected with the Rabies virus but not able to pass it to others/not show signs for months) then death will usually occur within 10 days. This is where the 10 day observation period stems from. It is possible, however, for an animal to be carrying the virus but not YET able to transmit the virus for longer periods of time. For this reason if an unvaccinated dog is bitten by another animal such as a raccoon, a quarantine period of 6 months is usually recommended. The exact rules will depend on your local laws.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Rabies laws are specific to the country. I would contact your Veterinarian regarding the laws in Russia. In the US if a healthy cat presents for a vaccine and has no previous vaccine history we give it a Rabies vaccine. It is not illegal to do so. If we find out later that is was exposed to rabies no one gets in trouble. If a cat who has been vaccinated is exposed to a possibly rabid animal we still are allowed to booster the vaccine in the US. If the vaccine is overdue we MIGHT be able to vaccinate the animal but it has to be under quarantine for 6 months. Every state is different with the laws. We usually contact the State Vet for instructions. The symptoms will not be delayed or masked. It can take up to 6 months to show symptoms of rabies post exposure. If this cat was exposed to Rabies (confirmed) BEFORE it was vaccinated it can still get Rabies and should be in a strict quarantine or be euthanized. Rabies is deadly to humans. I recommend you contact a Vet in your country for your specific laws. Good luck!

Correct - if a dog is still alive and not showing any neurologic symptoms 10 days after a bite incident, then you can be certain that it was not carrying rabies in its salivary glands at the time of the bite.
