Is my 2-month-old golden retriever puppy eating the right amount?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 6.5 lbs

Hello! We just got home a 2 month old golden retriever puppy. We are currently feeding him 4 meals a day at 8 AM, 12:30 PM, 5:30 PM & 10 PM. The first and third meals are 5-6 tbsp of Nestle Cerelac mixed with 1 cup water and 1 tbsp fresh yogurt. His second and fourth meals are approx. 80gm of 'Royal Canin Maxi Starter Mother & Baby Dog' food pre-soaked in 1/2 cup water for about 30 mins. We are not giving him any treats. Are we over or under feeding our puppy? Every source cites differently!

Determine how much to feed a puppy can certainly be quite confusing! I'm glad to hear that you are offering Bourbon food four times per day. In another month, you can decrease his feeding to three times a day, and eventually twice per day. The Royal Canin Maxi Starter food is great for growing puppies! By 2 months of age, Bourbon should be able to start chewing through dry kibble, so you can start to wean him off of the water soaked kibble over the next few weeks. Cerelac is not a necessary component of any dog's diet, so I would recommend stopping that and strictly feeding the balanced puppy food. Based upon the feeding guide for your puppy food, Bourbon should eat around 250 - 260 gm per day, meaning that he should eat around 60 - 65 gm per meal. Toby is absolutely adorable! You have a great question. He should still be eating three times a day at this age, once morning, noon, and evening. When he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day (morning and evening). As for how much at each meal, take the daily recommended allotment on his bag of food, and divide it into three equal portions to feed throughout the day. Once he reaches six months of age, divide it into two equal portions. I hope this helps :-)

Yes that is a lot of food. I suggest you feed a good brand complete puppy food for medium to large breeds (depending on how big your dog will be) and feed your puppy according to the label on the food. It should give you a daily ration and you should then feed this over three to four feeds divided. This then would be the proper amount to feed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ideal weight is based on more than age and breed. Skeletal frame is also important. Posting a picture of Luna would be helpful. On AVERAGE a 3 month female golden puppy should weigh around is between 16 and 22 lbs. It is hard to make puppies fat. I recommend using the bag label for feeding instructions. If she is too thin (see hip bones and can see and easily feel every rib) increase the amount of food and if she is too fat (can't easily feel ribs and no waist) then decrease it some. I think it is perfectly fine to feed him twice a day. I would feed him about 1.5 to 2 cups twice a day depending on how active he is. If you want to give him some of the human food supplements, that is fine but I would not make it his main diet as that doesn't have all the vitamins and minerals that he needs. i hope this helps.
