My dog has yellow liquid poop. Will pumpkin help firm up his stool?

My dog is having very liquidy yellow poop. Will pumpkin help to make the stool more firm?

Pumpkin does contain fiber, which can help with mild diarrhea some of the time. It certainly won't hurt anything to give it a try. However, if the diarrhea has been going on for more than 24 hours, I'd also schedule a vet visit for tomorrow. If Bruno seems weak, uninterested in eating, or just generally very ill, I'd recommend going to an emergency clinic tonight for evaluation.

You can add one tablespoon of canned pumpkin into his food once a day for 3-5 days, if it's just something minor it could solve the problem, if the diarrhea does not stop you should take him to your vet in order to get it sorted with medications.

There are several possible causes of diarrhea including food intolerance, parasites, viral or bacterial infection, and stress. I would start by taking a sample of the stool to your veterinarian to have them check for parasites. If everything looks okay, you could try a new food with a protein Griffin hasn't had before, such as rabbit, venison, or fish. Sometimes even switching brands of food can be enough. Continue with the pumpkin as you have been doing. Lastly, a probiotic or yogurt can add some healthy bacteria back to the system. I hope this helps. A larger than expected amount of canned pumpkin is unlikely to have any adverse effects apart from maybe flatulance. I would recommend a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora after antibiotics however as this also helps to restore the natural gut bacteria

The short answer is...yes. Plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) can be used to add fiber to the diet, promote healthy stool and a healthy gut, but may cause loose stool if too much is given or if Romeo has an allergy to pumpkin. The rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight once or twice daily. Decrease the amount if the stool is soft. As long as he is behaving normally, he does not need to be seen by your veterinarian. What you can do at home is withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly back to his regular diet. You can try the pumpkin again at a later date, but if he develops loose stools, then discontinue it and consider an alternative. Make sure he has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink at all times. Dehydration may cause firm stool. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting persistent diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed right away by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

My Shih Tzu has diarrhea after pumpkin. How can I get him better?

I would just keep an eye on him to make sure the loose stool clears up, you may not need to change his diet to resolve it. One teaspoon of pumpkin, especially if you have been feeding it for a while, shouldn't cause sudden diarrhea, so it may be something ese that briefly upset his stomach. If his diarrhea doesn't clear up in a day or so and/or he starts feeling sick, get him in to see your vet. Sometimes diarrhea can be a symptom of constipation, as liquid can move around a plug of hard stool.

Dog had diarrhea, bland diet. No poop in a day. Should I give pumpkin?

As long as Benny isn't straining or attempting to defecate without producing stool I wouldn't worry about lack of defecation. Sometimes after diarrhea resolves things can slow down through the gastrointestinal tract and it can take several days to resume a normal frequency of defecation. Sometimes adding fiber to the diet such as canned pumpkin can help with diarrhea, but since Benny hasn't had diarrhea in the past 24 hours I would simply continue the chicken and rice and begin a gradual transition to his usual diet in a day or two. If he goes more than three days without defecating I'd recommend seeing your vet.

This sounds like at this point Billy should really see your vet to have his stool checked for parasitse. Not all preventatives will cover all types of worms that pets can get, so it is best to have this checked. Most preventatives will prevent only 2-3 potentialy worms that pets can get. Until you can get Billy in to be seen by your vet it is best to offer him 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help solidify his stools and also a probiotic (Culturelle over the counter wokrs well) daily to help stabilize the stools. Most pets with loose stool like this will need a short course of antibiotics, so it is best to get him seen by your vet on Monday if the stool is still abnormal. My dog has soft, slimy poop but is active and eating. What to do?

I typically don’t recommend any specific treatment for soft stool or mild diarrhea as long as there is no blood, vomiting or a decrease in appetite. You could try a probiotic or a bland diet like chicken and rice (as long as there are no dietary restrictions) for a few days. I don’t recommend Pepto or Imodium for dogs, and while pumpkin won’t hurt in my experience it doesn’t help much. If the diarrhea lasts more than 3 days or you see other symptoms I’d recommend seeing your vet.

My dog has mushy yellow stool. Should I be worried about it?

However, if this does not resolve or progresses to watery diarrhea, a veterinary evaluation should be pursued. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Pepper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
