Is walking my dog four times a day too much? How often do dogs pee?

This can vary depending on the dog, their healthy status and if it’s a walk for exercise or if you are walking them to use the bathroom (like if you didn’t have a yard). To use the bathroom, dogs should have 5 or more opportunities a day for a potty break. Otherwise a walk once or twice a day for exercise is normal. Older dogs or dogs with health conditions need to be careful not to over do it. If your pet falls in this catagory, I recommend to call your vet as they are familiar with Fatboy and can tell you how much is too much. A healthy dog with no concerns should be fine. If once a day works for him and he is at a healthy weight then that is fine. If you think he may need to lose some weight then more frequent walks such as twice or three times a day would be better. Over exertion may lead to lifelong [orthopedic issues](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-common-orthopedic-conditions-in-dogs). The general recommendation is 5 minutes of exercise per month of age twice daily until fully grown, which for most dogs is about 1 year of age, although larger or giant breeds may not be fully grown until about 2 years of age. I recommend cutting back to two 20 minute walks per day, increasing it by 5 minutes each when she is 5 months, and so on. Because she has a lot of energy, you can work on [obedience training](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-obedience-commands-every-dog-should-know) with her (teaching her to sit, stay, lay down, etc.). That will use up some energy, and have the positive effect of [training](https://www.petcoach.co/article/new-dog-survival-guide-tips-for-training) her.

I'd take Louie out every four to six hours. It might be a good idea, if you can, to come home from work at lunch to take him out to potty. Take away water about an hour before bed, and take him out to potty right before bedtime.

My first concern with going that much would be a urinary tract infection. Kidney disease and diabetes can also cause increased urination. There may have been a recent dog walking the same path and Birdie may have been marking. Without seeing her it’s hard to say. To be sure I recommend taking Birdie to a vet for an exam and to test her urine for problems. You could also continue to monitor her. If she continues to urinate frequently at home, you notice a change in her appetite, drinking habits, or lethargy then I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Birdie!

Hello. You are doing the absolute best thing by slowly adjusting your dog to 2 walks a day. Great job! I would not worry about Archie not going out at lunchtime unless he has any type of medical problem. He should be able to hold things in until you return home. Most pets with working parents never go out until someone comes home from work. I am fortunate to go home for lunch every day, & most days one, or sometimes both my dogs, refuse to go out. They want to see what mom is fixing for lunch. So if they do not go out, then they have to wait until I get home at 5:30. Try to let Archie out twice in the morning, as soon as you get up & right before leaving the house. In the evening, 2-3 times is more than sufficient. He will adjust just fine. As long as Bruno is eating a healthy diet and is not eating too much (is maintaining a healthy weight) and you are able to get him out for a walk at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes or so, I don't see any reason to fear he will die early due to this walk routine.
