Why does my dog throw up after drinking water? What are the causes?

She may be vomiting as a consequence of her liver disease (depending on the underlying cause of the inflammation) or she could have developed a separate problem. It is likely wise to have blood work and urine testing repeated. Be sure to have her checked for pancreatitis. She may even need an abdominal ultrasound by a board certified radiologist. In the meantime, you never want to limit water. However, you could offer her smaller amounts at one time to see if this helps. Thank you very much for your question. Because she is a deep chested dog, we do worry about bloating or other gastrointestinal stomach disease when there is an alteration in drinking or eating. You can fix the airbag problem by doing a few different things. First, you can elevate all of your water bowls so that she may not vomit as often. Second, you can give her a watering system that is constantly moving water that mimics a sink. These are available on many of the commercial retail online sites. Lastly, you can give her 1/4 or half of the amount of water that you normally give her when you are there. By this I mean you won’t give half of the normal water she drinks. But only give half if she is in a shaded, cool, or inside air-conditioned place. If she continues to vomit her water or food often, you can ask your veterinarian to put you on a daily anti-vomiting medication. Thanks a lot for your question. I hope I have helped.

Depends on if there is a tumor on the heart causing compression of the esophagus leading to regurgitation, etc. If the cancer is spreading and beginning to affect other areas of the body such as the GI tract, then vomiting can certainly be a clinical symptom that is seen. Some dogs drink too quickly leading them to vomit up some of the water. I would recommend allowing her to drink small portions of water at a time and fill the bowl with water about 1/4 of the normal amount. Once she is finished drinking that amount, wait about 15 minutes and if she holds that down ok, you can give her more. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Poor girl. She may have a condition that is causing this such as megaesophagus. I am not sure if your vet has ran any tests yet, but I would recommend starting with thoracic radiographs and perhaps even a barium series will need to be done to detect a possible megaesophagus. Form there the vet will prescribe medication if this conditon is confirmed. The main concern with a pet that regurgitates is aspiration pneumonia. This is why they suggest to elevate the food bowl to allow gravity to help keep the food down. However most owners have to make a gruel (water mixed with food and then puréed) and also give pro-motility drugs (i.e. Metoclopramide) in addition to help manage this condition. Poor Lily sounds quite ill at the moment! I would be concerned that she is vomiting water if her throw is clear liquid, and in a senior dog, that can quickly lead to dehydration. I know it's Monday in Australia, so I would take her into a vet today. She may need a shot to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids for hydration. The vet can also diagnose the cause of the vomiting, which can include severe GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or something more serious such as organ failure or cancer. Regurgitation can be a sign of esophagitis, which can occur secondary to severe vomiting, a stricture or other obstruction in the esophagus, reflux, or megaesophagus, a condition where the nerves and muscles of the esophagus do not work. It's hard to know what the additional testing would be and what diseases your vet thinks are most likely without knowing exactly what tests were runs and what the results were. I think it would be best to ask your vet for more information.
