My dog vomited black, smelly stuff with long things. Is she okay?

Hi my female dog just vomited black with some long things inside and it smells horrible I can't get rid of the smell after I cleaned is she ok?

Hi there. Sorry to hear that Diamond is not feeling well. If what she vomited up was causing her problems she may feel better now, and this should be reflected by her being bright, happy, and wanting to eat and drink and play. If she is not happy, seems to be painful in her abdomen, is not wanting to eat or drink, or is not wanting to play, then i would recommend having her checked by a veterinarian. The concern is that either she ate something that was rotting and now brought it up, or that she has necrotic tissue inside her guts from a different disease and is vomiting up rotting from her own self. If she continues to vomit, is lethargic, or seems sick at all I would strongly recommend having her see a veterinarian. If she is otherwise bright and happy I would feed her boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice for 2 days and then re-introduce her food slowly. If she becomes unwell have her checked out.

I’m so sorry to hear about Diamond! Unfortunately, these signs could be caused by several things including infection (parvo, other), toxin (chocolate, raisin, marijuana, other), pancreatitis, foreign material stuck in the stomach, liver or kidney disease, etc etc.

If she vomits again or seems to get worse in any way, I’d strongly recommend taking Diamond to the nearest emergency vet. You may be offered x-rays and/or bloodwork depending on the exam and information your vet gets from you. They can also give fluids to help correct dehydration and anti nausea medication if indicated.

If the vomiting has stopped, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If anything changes or she looks worse, take her in to the vet.

It sounds like Princess may have eaten something naughty (trash, toilet paper, paper plate, sock, toy stuffing, other) that decided to come back up. The fact that she has shown no signs today is promising. If she has eaten and kept it down, you are likely in the clear. Caveat: Do watch her closely for the next 2-3 days because if a smaller piece of whatever it was did get through and gets lodged in the intestine, you'll see lots more vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If this happens, it's time to see the vet. My dog has a mass, breathing problems, vomiting, and dark slimy stool.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It does appear that Diamond has several issues. Diarrhea and vomiting could be due to something like gastroenteritis for example. The breathing issues could be due to a lot of factors such as pneumonia or heart disease, among other possibilities. The mass may be benign or malignant. I highly recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian who can start by performing a physical examination on her and taking it from there. Good luck!

My dog threw up yesterday. What is this dried mess that smells like food?

It could be either dry vomit or dry feces (if the it smells like food, it is more likely to be vomit though). Just to be on the safe side, start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My dog ate another dog's vomit at the park. Can she get sick?

I would be concerned that it could cause Skye some GI upset such as vomiting. If it does, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My 3-month-old puppy is vomiting and has black poop. What's wrong?

It sounds as Roxy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

My dog vomited twice, seems normal, but has dark gums. Is it serious?

Hi there and thank you for your post! The gums may be a dark color naturally for Doxie and it may be difficult to see her capillary refill time because the gums are too dark. If the gums are darker the what you usually see, I would have your vet check her out to make sure she is ok. If she is fine and just had the vomiting after she ate, I would withhold food for 12 hours and then feed a bland diet of chicken and rice. If she is lethargic / worsening I would get her seen right away by your vet. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I am also available via consultation.

My dog threw up a blue ball and black substance. Should I worry?

Poor guy. It is good that he at least vomited up this foreign object and hopefully he didn't ingest additional things that can harm him. Monitor him for the next 24 hrs for any other signs/symptoms that would prompt a vet visit, such as lethargy, decreased appetite, more vomiting or loose stool. I am not sure what the black substance is without seeing it, but as long as he is acting well and continues to do well for the next 24 hrs, he should be fine. If you do notice other symptoms or signs of trouble though, he should be seen by your vet right away for some testing and treatment. Best of luck with Boris and I hope that his illness symptoms stop here with the 1 vomiting episode. Keep him out of reach of objects that he can easily digest that could potentially harm him in the future. Best wishes and take care.
