My dog swallowed a chicken bone. What can I feed to prevent issues?

Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. You can give him a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal to form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract.

The theory behind the bread is you are hoping it will stick to outside of the bones to protect the intestines from getting poked and make it smoother to pass. This is a theory and may or may not work. Some dogs can pass bones with out bread or anything. It depends on the dogs digestive tract, how many pieces the bones are in, and how big the dogs is. It may cause bloody diarrhea when passing through the colon. I would just monitor him from here and if you notice vomiting or bloody diarrhea then take him to your vet.

Poor dog. Unfortunately bones have the potential to cause intestinal obstruction in pets, so you want to monitor him/her for he next 24-48 hrs for signs of trouble. The rotisserie chicken can also cause an acute inflammatory response of the pancreas (pancreatitis), so monitoring for that is also advised. Watch out for signs that include: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. If you see these symptoms then your pet should seek medical attention by your local vet immediately for a proper care. In the meantime you should feed your pet a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help the stomach settle. You can also offer your pet 1/2-1 slice of bread (depending on the size of your pet) twice a day to help bind the bones and encourage passage through the gut. Also taking your pet on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day can help promote GI (gastrointestinal) motility and encourage passage of the bones as wel. Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Briggs. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for x-rays. This will tell you if he ingested the bone or not. If not, then you will not have to worry. If so, this is potentially a serious situation. The bone can splinter can harm the stomach or intestines. A blockage can also result. If Jackson is eating and having normal bowel movements, he may have passed the fragments without your noticing. If Jaxson is. Since Kiera is a larger dog, it is less likely that the chicken bone will cause an obstruction. However, if you are concerned, your veterinarian can take an x-ray to confirm that the chicken bone is still in the stomach. If it is in the stomach, it can be endoscopically removed to prevent an obstruction from occurring.
