My dog's paw nail keeps splitting. What can I do at home for her?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

the top part of my dogs paw close to her nail is splitting. We've taken her to the vet but she will not allow them to examine her feet and gets quite cranky. They gave us some antibiotics so they would not become infected but 2 weeks after finishing them it's starting to happen again. Is there anything I can do at home for her?

This may be a resistant infection or the area may keep getting reinfected because it is in a highly mobile spot where contamination is very easy (the foot).

I would recommend taking your dog back to the vet for a recheck and having her sedated for the examination. This way the doctor will be able to closely examine the toe and the nail. The doctor will then be able to clip the nails back far enough to hopefully remove the problem.

There is also a specific disease of the toenails that may need long-term treatment from specific medications. This is an auto-immune disease, lipoid onchodystrophy, and has a very specific presentation. Your vet should be able to determine if your dog has this condition with a thorough exam.

My dog has a split nail. Can I treat it at home or does he need a vet?

This rarely get infected if disinfected properly, but a check up would be ideal just to cut off the remaining part of the nail. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (at least twice daily for the next 3-4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. My dog ripped a nail off her front paw. What should I do to help her?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ouch, poor Naria. If the nail is completely removed and exposing the nail bed, keep the toe as clean as possible to try to prevent infection. For my patients that have done this, I typically will place them on oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain medication) to prevent infection and keep them comfortable while the nail regrows. Some nails will not regrow normally if the nailbed was also injured. If Naria is limping on the affected paw, or the toe becomes swollen I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian for appropriate medications to be dispensed.

My dog is licking his paw. His nail split and has gunk. What to do?

I would be hesitant to do anything at home as it may be too painful. The dark part is likely old blood and discharge over the nerve part the shell protects. The shell is displaced exposing thisbtissue. Often times they need to be sedated to have it cleaned and trimmed back past the break to get to healthy tissue. You can try to soak it warm water to see if you can clean up around hr nail and get the discharge gone but it may be too painful to do. I would get him to your vet for this when you can

My dog's long, brittle nail broke to the quick. What can I do at home?

Now this is likely going to continue to improve slowly but it will take time to do so. If he appears to be painful, it would be best to go to a veterinarian as they can proceed to cut the rest of the nail so it heals quicker and also send him home on pain control medications. Why does my dog keep getting a recurring paw infection near her claw?

Poor Khloe! If two rounds of antibiotics haven't cleared it up I would suggest having your vet take a sample to send to a lab for testing. This can check for the type of bacteria/yeast that may be causing it, or can help rule out anything else such as a tumor or growth. Sometimes, the nail bed itself can become infected if the nail is torn or damaged, and keeping the nails trimmed short can help prevent traumatic injury to the nail bed in addition to treatment recommended by your vet.

My dog has a painful split nail and is limping. What should I do?

Hi, I think the old nail should be removed. It would also be great if we could prevent Marley from licking the area as this can cause inflammation and infection. I know this is tricky given Marley’s breed ! Another thing you could do is bathe Marley’s paw in diluted Chlorexidine twice a day, dilution is normally 1:10 (i.e. one part of chlorexidine to 10 of water ) but even to make a very diluted pink solution will do and dry up with a clean cotton cloth afterwards.
