My dog has bladder issues. Should I worry about Acepromazine sedation?

Unfortunately Acepromazine does not take away fear and anxiety. It just sedates the dog, he will appear quieter, but inside, she is just as anxious, just cannot express it. There is a much better medication for that and it is called Sileo. Your veterinarian can provide you with that and give you the proper dosage for Bella. We are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving acepromazine.

Hello. It is unlikely that this dose will be fatal, but this is an indication that she cannot tolerate this medication. Sedatives can be very unpredictable in dogs, so much care & thought must be given before administering them. If you can get her to the vet, that would be best. To avoid being bitten, ask to borrow a muzzle from your vet, or go ahead & purchase one. If you cannot do this, then you will just have to let the ace wear off, which can take 24 hours. Just make sure she is not lying in the damp or in bad weather. If you need to get her to the vet, next time you might talk about using something like Trazodone to calm her anxieties, or just a tiny dose of the ace. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, the active ingredient in this product (acepromazine) is safe for otherwise healthy pets. The main adverse reactions are sleepiness for an extended period of time (like 12-24 hours), and low blood pressure. Always try the low end of the dose range first, and if that is not sufficient, increase the dose. Use as directed on the box or by your veterinarian to make it as safe as possible. This drug is meant for occasional use (like a trip to the vet). I would not recommend it for daily use (except in short term cases like for a few days after a surgery when the patient needs to stay quiet). Hope this helps and best of luck to you and you cat!

You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs. Hi there. PPA (phenylpropanolamine, or Proin) is a very common first-line choice for urinary incontinence in female dogs, and often works well in my experience. So it's likely that this could be a good option for Sofi, depending on whether she has any other underlying health issues to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription over the internet, as legally this has to be done by a veterinarian who has physically examined your pet. So I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian in your area to bring Sofi in for an exam. He/she can discuss medication options for urinary incontinence with you, and should be able to provide a prescription for whatever medication the two of you decide to try.

Not to worry! 35mg of acepromazine is still within a normal dosage range for a dog Botticelli's size. She may be extra groggy and have a longer nap than usual, but there should be no other detrimental effects. :-)

I'm sorry you are dealing with this condition with Gizmo. Phenylpropanolamine often works well for urinary incontinence, but I am worried that there might be something else going on if Gizmo is drinking a lot of water. If there is another medical condition going on, Phenylpropanolamine may not work. So, I would have you veterinarian perform a urinalysis on Gizmo to check for any underlying medication conditions that may be causing the urinary incontinence that are treatable with a different medication.
