My small dog was attacked. Could he have internal injuries without visible wounds?

My Yorkshire terrier was picked up and shaken by a larger dog. There’s no puncture wounds and it was 48 hours ago. He’s 14 years old and usually quite active but seems to be traumatised from his ordeal. He’s eating and drinking but is acting unusual - he’s moving a lot slower and seems really nervous. Could there be internal injuries that could have happened or could he just be bruised? What signs should I look out for to take him to the vets?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that your Yorkie got attacked by another dog. He could absolutely have injuries that you cannot see, either to his muscle or spine/neck. If he is moving slower, he may have neck pain that hurts him when he moves. I recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment, so he/she can perform a physical exam and localize any pain. Your vet can prescribe pain/anti-inflammatory medications that help your pet be more comfortable. If you cannot get him to the vet, I recommend keeping him rested (ie restricted to a crate) so he cannot hurt himself further. I hope this is helpful!

Keep in mind that most dog attacks to small dogs cause a lot of trauma and most of the time there is much more trauma inside than what you can see from the outside. They would be able to examine her more closely and proceed with therapy accordingly. At the very least they can proceed with pain control medications as she is likely painful which is why she is not eating well. I am hoping for a full recovery!

My dog was attacked. Why is she coughing, heaving, and can't bark?

The main reason dog fights or dog attacks are so concerning especially when the other dog is a small dog is that there is usually more trauma inflicted than what you can see on the outside. For that reason, I highly recommend that you check in with a veterinarian who can examine her to look for other possible traumatic lesions that may need therapy. Best of luck!

My dog was attacked. He's not drinking and bumping. Is it serious?

I'm sorry to hear that Mylo was attacked! It is concerning that he is not drinking, moving his head abnormally and bumping into objects. This could be occurring due to head trauma or neurologic deficits caused by the attack, and some of these signs can take a longer time to present if there is swelling in the brain. I do recommend taking Mylo back to the vet for another exam to reassess his neurologic function and cranial nerve responses. The vet may also need to give him fluids since he is not drinking and puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration than adult dogs. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Dog attacked, no visible injuries, acting strange. Should I see a vet?

Poor Boogie! I'm sorry to hear that this happened. How frightening for both of you! Since he isn't wanting to get up or move around this morning, I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. He may just be sore, but internal injuries are always a possible concern after a dog fight, even if there were no outward marks. Your veterinarian can examine him to see if anything is seriously wrong, and may recommend x-rays or other testing if needed.

My Yorkie was attacked by a coyote. Puncture wounds & swelling. Vet needed?

Oh no, poor Hailey! I'm so sorry she was attacked by a coyote. This is a medical emergency, and she has to see a vet now. Coyotes have very strong bites, and she could have internal damage from the attack. This will also be very painful for her. Given that she is up to date on her rabies vaccine, I'm not concerned about that but I am concerned about internal injuries and pain. She needs veterinary care now, please take her into vet right away.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! Poor Killer! you need to get Killer to a Vet today. The wound itself needs surgery to explore it and close it with stitches. But the Vet has to make sure that the leg isn't broken and he isn't in shock. Ultimately if it is just the wound he should be fine. He will need that wound addressed. I wish Killer the best!

Dog attacked, no visible wounds, screams when touched. What to do?

I'm so sorry that you and Taz have experienced this. I would recommend getting Taz to a veterinarian right away. He may just be bruised and very painful, or he may have some internal damage that needs immediate attention. Either way, Taz needs significant pain medication. In the meantime, I would not recommend any over the counter pain medication since it may interact with the medications that your veterinarian may give him. Good luck!
