Is Anipryl effective for treating canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD)?

My late dog was 20 years old and had a heart murmur, liver disease, kidney disease and CCD. I placed him on selegiline at the end because I felt it would make him sleep better and not be as confused. I felt that it helped a little, but wasn't great. It should be used with caution in liver or renal disease. If you think it will make him more comfortable for the time he has left, then I would put him on a trial of the medication along with a liver supplement such as Denamarin. It is characterized by anxiety (especially at night), panting, pacing, becoming stuck in corners (due to disorientation) and accidents in the house. If these signs sound familiar, it would be best for her to see her veterinarian. There are prescription medications that can be used in some cases. At home though, you could transitioning her to Purina ProPlan Bright Minds. It really does seem to help these patients. I hope this information helps!

Hello. Most times you can give Anipryl along with Trazodone safely. On occasion, if the doses were/are high enough with both drugs, you might see serotonin syndrome. I am sure your veterinarian is quite aware of the doses used & is confident that Mitch will be fine. I recommend Hills b/d diet and you can give the supplement senilife. It’s specifically for cognitive dysfunction in dogs. Anapril is a prescription drug for cognitive dysfunction that I’ve used on my geriatric dogs with good results. You will need to get this from your veterinarian. ACP is not a medicine to counteract dementia, it is just a sedative. I like to recommend a medicine called selegiline which works very well in dement dogs and cats, does not sedate them but helps with the anxiety involved. Dogs will be able sleep through the night again and will be less confused. You may want to discuss this with either your vet or get a second opinion. CBD has not been researched in veterinary medicine, so there is little experience and only anectdotal evidence. It is also not licensed for treatment yet, so I am afraid I cannot recommend it.

I’ve used it with success in my geriatric terrier. It helped him sleep better and be less anxious. I also gave Neutricks daily for his dementia. I have also used the prescription drug anipryl for cognitive dysfunction but I usually try the Solliquin and Neutricks first. Dementia is easily treated. You should make an appointment with your vet to rule out other diseases. Should the diagnosis be that Betsey suffers from dementia (typical signs are pacing at night, crying, not knowing where she is , needing you to "save" her from loneliness), there is a medication that can be given which will alleviate all those signs. The medication is called Selegiline (generic name) or brandname Anipryl. In the meantime you can leave a small lamp on at night, and leave the radio on(unless she is deaf). That often helps, too.
