My cat has a UTI with bloody urine. Can I split her cephalexin dose?

The clavaseptin will be fine as it does has a wide dose range. However, the prazosin is not an antibiotic it is a medication used in high blood pressure etc. I assume your cat has some sort if urinary issue or high blood pressure if it is on this medication? Thankfully the dose range for prazosin is 0.25mg to 1mg per cat every 8 to 12 hours so even though you gave a double dose 2 half tablets is still within range. I would go ahead and give your tablets this evening as long as the cat has seemed okay today. Try and stick to the schedule as best you can. If you are worried that your cat is sleepy/dizzy I would take him to the vet as soon as you can.

Please take her to a Pet ER for an exam, urinalysis and prescription pain medicine if needed. It is rare for cats to have an actual infection (UTI), however cats often get a stress induced inflammatory reaction of the bladder which is quite painful and has the same signs as a UTI. Please do not give her any medication designated for humans. Cats often cannot metabolize human medications properly. Best take her to a Pet ER now. If you call your vet's office, there will be information on the nearest emergency veterinary service on the answering machine.

Unfortunately you will not be able to just order an antibiotic online. This may not be a urinary tract infection and could be what we call a sterile cystitis. You could start by ensuring she is drinking plenty of water (recirculating water fountains help), switch to canned food and start a supplement called paxon or cranberry supplement treats for cats, which can be found online. If the symptoms are no better, the next step would be to have her seen by a veterinarian for testing and further treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. This could be due to an infection that is resistant to the antibiotics being given or it could be something else like stones or a tumor. I highly recommend that you consider taking Tao to his veterinarian for reevaluation. Diagnostics that should be considered at this point include a urine culture to make sure that if there is an infection, you know which antibiotic would be best to use. Other diagnostics should include abdominal imaging such as radiographs or ultrasound. Good luck and have a great day!

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! Usually it will take a few days for the antibiotics to show marked improvement. That being said, urine in the blood if there was a large amount may take a few days more to improve. If her other symptoms (urinary urgency or accidents) are improved I would be less concerned. If at the end of the week she is still having blood I would let your vet know as they may want to check for things like a bladder stone or mass which could be causing bleeding.

It could be a UTI, which would need antibiotics. Other possible causes include urinary bladder stones or congenital changes with the bladder or urethra. Since I am not sure exactly what is going on, I can't really tell you what to do. If you have access to antibiotics, you can try that, but we can't prescribe them online as it is illegal for us to do so.
