My cat threw up hair ties and keeps vomiting. Should I worry?

My cat threw up two hair ties today while I was at work. She seems fine now but is still throwing up occasionally. Should I be worried??

Yes you always have to be worried with potential foreign body ingestions. Hair ties are pretty small so the chance that they can cause blockages are slim, but they can still get stuck in the intestines and cause problems There are two possibilities at this point:

1) There is another hair tie still in there ( this will take some deductive reasoning in your part) that is stuck.

2) All hair ties have been expelled and your pet now just has an upset stomach due to dietary indiscretion.

The odds are good because it is very small and had no sharp edges. With small foreign bodies it is recommended feed the pet a bulking agent like 1/2-1 loaf of bread or canned food that will help bind any additional objects within the GI tract and potentially help expel them out of the system.

I would keep an eye on her for now. If she starts acting lethargic, vomiting, having diarrhea, becomes anorexic, or doesn't pass any feces at all, then I would take her into the vet immediately. Hopefully, this hair tie will pass without problem, but you can give her a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to add more fiber to her diet to see if that helps her pass feces. Why did my cat vomit green hairballs with a string? Should I worry?

Hello, You may have gotten very lucky and that was all that was in there. If not watch for any continued vomiting, difficulty/pain when pooping and any behavior changes (sleeping more, not wanting to eat, etc) those would indicate a need to got to the vet. They may want to do xrays at that point to see if there is evidence of any string caught in the intestine.

My cat ate a hairband, vomited, still distressed. Is it serious?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Rubber bands can form linear foreign bodies, which are very dangerous to cats. In Majid case, it also could be that a piece of a hairband or rubber has tangled up at the base of the tongue and is causing heaving and distress. If Majid has been vomiting that much, it would be safer if you take him to your local vets today to check him over.

You should be looking for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and anorexia. Those are signs of a foreign body ingestion causing an obstruction. You can also take PJ into a vet now to get x-rays to look for them. Best of luck.

My cat ate string and vomited. Should I worry about obstruction?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could have been due to a partial obstruction. If she vomited all the obstructing material (string) then she may be ok. However, if she continues to vomit, this may be due to an obstruction and further therapy may be needed. My cat threw up ribbon, now bile but acts normal. Should I worry?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tatum! The vomiting could be from residual irritation from the ribbon or there could be more ribbon that is causing an obstruction. It is also possible it is completely unrelated to the ribbon in general: intestinal parasites, hair ball, ate something else gross (plant, etc), pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. You can continue to watch him but if he continues to vomit or stops eating that is an emergency and he needs to see a vet for an exam and an X-ray to check for a blockage. I wish you the best!
