My cat's eye whites are brown/red, and she's vocal. Is it serious?

Hello. When the third eyelids are prominent, then this could be an indication that a cat is unwell, but from your picture, Nojiko looks perfectly healthy, bright & alert. Hopefully it is just a normal pigment change, but cats can develop a type of cancer known as melanoma in the eye. You would want this diagnosed as soon as possible. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He seems to have an opacity in his eye. This can be on the cornea (surface of his eye) or on the lens. He could have a scratch across his eye or even a scar. If the problem is on his lens, then a cataract is a possibility. His veterinarian will examine his eye with a special instrument called an ophthalmic scope. Some tests may be recommended as well. I hope this information helps!

Although a picture would help to determine underlying cause of it more specifically, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an allergy or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. In the photos you've posted, the eye appears within normal limits. I can make out the iris, pupil, sclera, and conjunctiva at least partially in some or all of the pictures. The only way to assess the eye functionally is in person with the presence of ophthalmic tools. However, I see no reason to recommend any further diagnostics unless you suspect Memo is having problems with eyesight or is having other ophthalmic issues. Hope this makes sense.

I would say that based on the picture and your description, as long as the eye does not look reddened or inflamed and the discharge is not green or yellow then I would say waiting 2 or 3 days should be fine. If at the end of the two to three day time frame the discharge is still there and is not any better or is worse, then I would schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to have this looked at. What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. Some drugs will make them go up more, tapeworms (https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442) can sometimes make them go up in cats, and any irritation of the eye can make them go up. Since it appears to be getting worse, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to see if they can find a cause.
