Why can't my cat meow, only squeak and snore? Should I worry?

I wouldn't be concerned if this is how he has always sounded. Upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and sometimes swelling can affect the vocal folds - it's possible that he had some scar tissue formed. It's also possible that this is how he was born. If he does have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if he regurgitates or vomits you should see your vet.

It could just be her attitude, or she could be sick. Upper respiratory infections, nerve issues, polyps or masses in the throat, and hyperthyroidism could cause lethargy and a change in "voice." If you are concerned about Melo being seing, then I would recommend that you have her examined by a vet. They can do a thorough exam and discuss diagnostics or treatment if there is concern.

If your cat is otherwise happy, healthy, and eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would not be too concerned. Caboose is a cutie! An ear infection would not likely make him lose his meow but a severe respiratory tract infection could have damaged the vocal chords. Some cats however have very soft or absent meows and it’s not pathologic. It’s likely impossible to know which one is that play here. Upper respiratory infections, allergies, and minor issues with the throat or lungs can sometimes cause congestion or coughing/snoring sounds, however minor cases may resolve on their own with little symptoms. If your cat is still eating and drinking and acting normally, it may just be best to keep an eye on her and watch for any changes. If you do see symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, loss of appetite, fever, difficulty breathing or discharge from the eyes and nose, then scheduling a veterinary appointment for further care is best. If she stays normal, then bringing it up at your next vet checkup if still concerned is best so that your vet can make sure to examine those areas more thoroughly.

Some kitties, just like humans, do snore. I have two cats who snore very loud, when they are completely relaxed. This can be quite normal, but in some instances it could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, or a mass or foreign body in the upper airways. If your cat has always snored, and if it is not a recent condition and he has no discharge from his nose, I would not worry. I see that Salem is not neutered, which makes him develop a broad head and cheeks. This can also change the anatomy of the airways and cause a tom to snore. If Salem coughs, has a discharge or trouble breathing, I suggest you take him to your veterinarian for an exam.

Sometimes a viral upper respiratory infection can affect the back of the throat and cause swelling that could affect your cat’s ability to meow. Difficulty swallowing can also occur when something is lodged in the esophagus or if there is a problem with a tooth.
