Why is my cat bleeding after stitches removed from bladder surgery?

There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

Hi there. Often, losing a single suture a few days after surgery isn't a huge deal, especially if the incision still appears to be closed and there is no bleeding or drainage. But it's hard to say if this is a problem or not without being able to see it. If you want to, you can post a photo of the incision for us to look at - we may be able to give you a better idea of whether it needs any treatment.

Ongoing bleeding could be caused by a clotting disorder or low platelets or ongoing inflammation in the urinary bladder. Incontinence could be related to the trauma of the catheterization, administration of IV fluids, bladder inflammation, kidney failure, etc. You may want to discuss additional blood tests and bladder ultrasound with your vet.

I'm sorry Kouty had to have his eye enucleated! My own cat needed his eye enucleated recently, and I have to say that one eyed cats are very handsome! While you can see some bleeding after surgery, it shouldn't continue for days after surgery. Blood tinged discharge is normal, but active bleeding is not. I think you did the right thing by leaving him in the clinic for observation, but the bleeding should be stopped when you get him tomorrow. My own cat didn't have active bleeding after his surgery, he had some mild bloody discharge that stopped pretty quickly. If you see him still actively bleeding tomorrow, I would be concerned and have the vet check him out. My cat didn't have a patch on his eye, but he did have an Ecollar on to keep him from scratching at his eye while the area healed. I would recommend having one of those for him. That looks like bruising. I don’t think this is normal and I recommend to have Kurapika examined by the veterinarian to check her gum color and hematocrit to make sure there are not signs of internal bleeding. It’s possible this is from a pulled internal suture or something other than internal bleeding but it needs to be checked. Also make sure she has strict exercise restriction. Keep her in a bathroom so she can’t run around or be jumping. She should also wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Have her examined today. I hope it’s nothing serious and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thank you for the picture, it really helps with my answer. The incision still looks like it's together, so you don't need to rush Ella into a vet immediately. Just keep her quiet, and monitor it daily. If the incision comes apart, there is excessive bleeding, it appears infected, or that stitch falls out, have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps.

The photo didn't come through. A small amount of spotting can be normal and generally the incisions on cats heal quickly even if they open up a little. As long as he's eating and acting normal I'm not overly concerned about this. Keeping the cone on will prevent his licking the area and it will heal more quickly. Should the incision look very red or have a bad odor then I would take him back to have it checked. I expect though that it will improve every day.
