Bringing home a new puppy? Congratulations! You are in for years of love, loyalty and fun. And it’s time to go puppy shopping and pick up everything you need to give your pup the wonderful life they deserve.

Need a new puppy shopping checklist? Here’s a good start:

• Food bowl
• Water bowl
• Dog bed (sized for your puppy)
• Crate (sized for your puppy)
• Pee pads
• Waste bags
• Scooper
• Puppy food (formulated for puppies or all life stages)
• Treats (formulated for puppies or all life stages)
• Collar
• Leash
• Harness
• Toys (appropriate for puppies. Try to purchase a range of toys, like fetch toys, plush toys, interactive toys and chew toys)
• Nail clippers
• Toothbrush
• Puppy shampoo (formulated for puppies)
• Dog gate
• Playpen
• Carpet and floor cleaners for accidents

You may be tempted to let your new puppy sleep in bed with you on their first night in your home. However, if you don’t plan to allow your pup to sleep with you when they’re an adult, don’t allow this behavior as a puppy. As well-meaning as it may be, this habit will be difficult to break once it’s established.

A better idea is to place your puppy in a crate for their first night. This will help you begin crate training as well as house training your new pet. Make the crate comfortable by adding a mat or a dog bed and by placing it in a quiet part of the house. If you have other dogs in the house, put your puppy’s crate near their sleeping spot. Crate training is usually an important part of your puppy’s dog training and behavior journey.

Alternatively, you can establish a sleeping spot for your puppy by placing a puppy bed where you’d like them to sleep. This can even be in your bedroom if you’d like. Place your puppy there at night and return them if they try to get into your bed.

Keep in mind that puppies under four months old will likely need to go out at least once per night. You may want to place their crate in a spot that will make nighttime potty trips more convenient for you.
